Gabriel Vasquez was born in Midland, Texas July 27, 1971. He is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and is a proud alumnus of the 1989 Lee Rebels; famous rivals to the Odessa Permian Panthers depicted in the West Texas High School Football story & Hollywood film “Friday Night Lights”. He began studying guitar at age 26 and launched his musical career with 3rd generation Mariachi Estrella in 1997. Soon after launching his musical career, he began serious studies in classical guitar, voice, & vihuela. His musical teachers include Dr. Bruce Douglas of the University of Texas School of vocal performance, Chris Vincent Master Classical Guitarist & Performer, & armonia studies with Rafael Palomar of Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan.

In February 2002, he was called to help manage a new backup group formed by 3rd generation owner of Mariachi Estrella at the time, Rupert Ortiz. After completing his studies in Commercial Music Management at Austin Community College in the fall of 2003, he reformed the group under the new name Mariachi Garibay. He continued successfully in the coming years with his new band, and bought the rights to Mariachi Estrella shortly after the retirement of the 3rd generation in 2007. He formed the 4th generation Mariachi Estrella with new members in the fall of 2008 and continues the tradition of Austin’s Best and Most Prominent Mariachi.

The vision of Gabriel Vasquez is to take the rich and colorful sound of Mariachi to new levels in the “Live Music Capitol of the World”; to reflect the cultural heritage through passionate performance and preservation of this beautiful art.
